What is Modern and Medieval Languages?

Modern and Medieval Languages covers a range of languages including French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Not only do you develop fluency in your chosen language, you also study the culture of countries where your chosen language is spoken. This might involve studying the literature, history, politics, film, art, media or philosophical thinkers. You might decide to start a new language alongside a language that you are already studying. Furthermore, you will get the opportunity to spend an extended period of time living abroad, speaking the languages you are studying on a daily basis.

What might I need to study Modern and Medieval Languages?

In order to study Languages at University such as French, Spanish or German, you will normally need an A Level in that target subject. For other language degrees, you may also need at least one A Level in a foreign language. However there are many courses which allow you to study a Language from scratch (known as 'ab initio') and these would not require you to have previously studied the Language before. Other subjects which are good preparation for a Modern Languages degree include English Literature or Language, History, Politics, Sociology and Maths.
